One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, Robert Capa was born in Budapest, on October 22, 1913, as Endre Ernő Friedmann. He started to work as a photographer in the 1930s, first as a correspondent of Dephot, a Berlin-based agency. In 1933 he moved to Paris, where he befriended André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson and David Seymour (Chim), and met with the great love of his life, Gerda Taro, also a photographer. He changed his name to Robert Capa in 1935, and his pictures of the 1936-1937 Spanish civil war were already published under this nom de plume. He immigrated to the US in 1939. Between 1941 and 1945, he worked on the European scenes of the war for Life magazine. He was one of the founders of the Magnum Photos agency. He died in May 1954, when he stepped on a landmine in Vietnam.

November 30, éjjel huszonhárom óra ötvenhét perc.

Erkély. Körülnéz, hová ülhetne. Jobb híján letelepszik a piszkossárga fal tövébe, a földre. Öngyújtó. Fülében közben ott a zene, de még nem indítja el. Majd akkor fogja, mikor beleszippant a szálba.

Elkezdődik. Körülnéz. Pont rálát a tízemeletes panelek utolsó néhány szintjére, a sarki hatalmas, fehér-vörös toronyházra, a közért sárga kéményére, amely folyamatosan füstöl. Fölötte a felső szomszéd szürke vakolatú erkélyének alja.

Feketéskék, párás égbolt egy szelete. Előtte az Erkély belseje, rajta krétarajzok; kék, zöld, piros, narancssárga, élénk színű, mosolygós gyümölcsök. Hétéves korában rajzolta.

Kifúj. Nagy mennyiségű nikotinfüst gomolyog át az erkély peremén, tétován megáll egy pillanatra, majd a sötét, csillagos ég felé menekül. Az oldalsó, sápadt, narancsszínű lámpaoszlop aztán vagy elkapja, vagy nem.

Fekete árny suhan el a panelházak fölött. Denevér. Fővárosban még nem látott denevért, talán kicsit meg is lepődik rajta.
Az erkély koszos. Végigsimít műanyagburkolatán, vörös-fehér ujja vége szürkésbarnává válik. Takarítani kéne.

Kifúj megint. Mátyás királyt a Duna jegén koronázták királlyá. A sok, aranyhímzett palástú nemes is így lehelhette ki a párát, mint ő most a füstöt. Hó is lehetett. Biztosan szép volt.
Alig remeg, nem fázik. Csak a keze mocorog folyamatosan, mintegy ütemre. Maga sem tudja, miért.

Csillagok, csillagok. Szép tud lenni egy novemberi, csillagos, mélysötét éjszaka, ha akar. Most úgy látszik, nem tudja eldönteni, akar-e szép lenni.
Nedves minden. Sötét a beton, de még így is halványan csillog. Nedves az ég is. Inkább érzi, mint látja.

Sötétrózsaszín-szürke hamu. Talán még egy szippantás belefér, aztán el kell nyomja. Már így is túl sok. Feláll, az erkély pereméhez lapítja a szálat, majd kinéz egy pillanatra. Akár ki is eshetne, persze ő nem akar kiesni.

Fekete, kék, narancssárga, szürke, sárga. Mind egy fokkal sötétebb, mint rendesen. És mind egybeolvad.
Feketekéknarancssárgaszürkesárga.

A hamut az utcára söpri, a csikket tisztes távolságba hajítja. Hisz a szüleinek nem szabad megtudnia.

Belép, becsukja az erkélyajtót, megáll. Belefülel a csendbe.
Átöltözik, lekapcsolja a számítógépet, bevackolódik az ágyba.
